MLB Rumors: Alex Bregman Reunion Not Ruled Out by Astros; Cubs Also Eyeing Contract
The Future of Alex Bregman: An Uncertain Return to Houston
Contract Talks Resume
Negotiations between Alex Bregman and the Houston Astros have reportedly resumed this week, hinting at a possible return for the star infielder.
"The Astros are keeping the door ajar" for Bregman's return, according to Bob Nightengale of USA Today. The team may consider shifting Isaac Paredes to second base and moving Jose Altuve to left field to accommodate Bregman.
Interest from Other Teams
Despite these talks, the Chicago Cubs are also believed to be interested in Bregman, as reported by Jon Heyman of the New York Post.
Other teams, including the Detroit Tigers, Boston Red Sox, and Toronto Blue Jays, have also expressed interest in signing the free agent.
Astros' Dilemma
Bregman reportedly declined a six-year, $156 million deal from the Astros earlier this offseason. He is believed to be seeking a closer to $200 million, which may be too high for Houston's comfort zone.
The Astros recently added Christian Walker to their infield, reducing their immediate need for Bregman. However, his veteran presence and championship experience could still be valuable to the team.
Bregman's Value
Despite his age, Bregman remains one of the best free agents available this offseason. He had a strong 2024 season, slashing .260/.315/.453 with 26 home runs and 75 RBI.
"Bregman is a special player," said his former manager, A.J. Hinch. "He brings leadership, energy, and a winning mindset to every team he plays for."
Countdown to Spring Training
With other teams vying for his services, the Astros will need to make a decision on Bregman's future soon. The closer we get to spring training, the more intense the bidding war is likely to become.
