Red Sox Interested In Alex Bregman On Shorter-Term Contracts
Red Sox Explore Short-Term Contract Options with Alex Bregman
Interest and Limitations
The Red Sox have expressed interest in acquiring Alex Bregman, but they are reportedly focused on shorter-term contracts of no more than four years.
"The Sox have been focusing on shorter-term offers with Bregman, with an eye towards signing him to a deal of no more than four years in length," noted Alex Speier of the Boston Globe.
Market Dynamics
While four years is a significant commitment, it falls short of Bregman's expectations. The Astros offered him a six-year, $156MM deal, while Bregman sought a $200MM contract. Despite receiving offers of five or more years, Bregman is still reportedly open to shorter-term pacts.
Obstacles to a Long-Term Deal
The Red Sox face competition from the Astros, who could offer Bregman a sixth year of guaranteed salary. Additionally, Bregman may value a fifth year's pay that offers more financial security.
Red Sox ownership, wary of recent free agent signings, may be hesitant to commit to a long-term deal, especially with Rafael Devers' $313.5MM extension on the books.
Position Flexibility and Organizational Needs
Bregman is willing to change positions, potentially to second base. However, the Red Sox have promising infield prospects Kristian Campbell and Marcelo Mayer, making it unlikely they will commit to Bregman at second base in the long term.
Management Divide
Sources indicate that while Manager Alex Cora and President Sam Kennedy are eager to sign Bregman, Chief Baseball Officer Craig Breslow may be less enthusiastic.
"This split of opinion in management might perhaps explain why the Red Sox haven't been as aggressive as others in courting Bregman," Specier said.
Bregman's Value
Despite concerns over a long-term commitment, Bregman's right-handed bat would be a valuable addition to Boston's lineup. He is a skilled hitter and a strong fielder.
